Here
are some for fun winter activities to try today!
- Go
outside and explore snow or ice formations. Look at hanging icicles
and snow drifts. Encourage your child to explore the snow in many different
ways– make snowballs, build a snow fort, make angels in the snow, roll
down a snowy slope, make snow cones with fresh snow and maple syrup.
Create letters and words in the snow using branches or other objects
found outside.
- Talk
with your child
about how the snow looks and feels and help your child build their vocabulary
with new words.
- Build
a snowperson. Measure your child and the snow person.
Who is the taller? Who is wider? This will help your child build beginning
math concepts. Watch the snowperson change over the next few days. This
will strengthen early science and observation skills.
- When
you get back inside, why not heat up some hot cocoa and get out the
art supplies? Encourage your child to draw pictures and
narrate a story about the snowperson. Write down what
your child says and together create a book. This activity will help
your child build understanding about reading and writing.
- Snow
is white. How many white things can you find
in your house? How many things can you find around the house that RHYME
with white?
- Visit
the library and take out some books to read together about
snow and winter. Some of our latest favorites are:
- Ice
Cream Bear by Jez Alborough
- It’s
Snowing! It’s Snowing!” by Jack Prelutsky
- Katy
and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton
