The spiral is a visual representation of how scaffolding and repeated exposure to a variety of language and literacy experiences and skills is essential to children's development and learning. The SPIRAL symbol is a model for helping teachers conceptualize intentionality in teaching.

Using the SPIRAL as a teaching model, teachers plan specific targets, materials and techniques for integrating literacy throughout the early childhood classrom and daily routine. The SPIRAL helps teachers recognize the way to develop lessons and differentiate learning. It provides a structured format for concrete, sequential and age-appropriate revisiting of skills.
